Launched in July 2024 and now the most popular long-stay option in Southeast Asia, the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) is a 5-year multiple-entry visa designed for remote workers, freelancers, and "soft power" participants (Muay Thai students, Thai cooking students, medical tourists). In 2026 it has effectively replaced the Elite Visa for most digital nomads β and at a fraction of the cost.
The DTV is a 5-year multiple-entry visa that lets you stay up to 180 days per entry, extendable once for another 180 days per trip. You can exit and re-enter as many times as you want during the 5 years. It is not a work visa for Thai employers β you must work remotely for clients or employers outside Thailand.
You must show at least 500,000 THB (~$14,000 USD) in accessible funds β bank statements, investment accounts, or a combination. The funds need to be genuinely yours and liquid. This is the main barrier for some applicants but is far below the old Elite Visa tier.
Applications are submitted through the official Thai e-Visa portal at a Thai embassy or consulate abroad. You will need: passport, proof of funds, employment or client contracts, professional portfolio or endorsement letter, and a recent photo. Processing typically takes 2β4 weeks.
If you stay in Thailand more than 180 days in a calendar year, you become a Thai tax resident. Thailand recently updated its foreign-income rules: income remitted into Thailand in the same year it was earned is taxable. Many nomads plan stays carefully or consult a Thai tax advisor before crossing the 180-day threshold.
The DTV is cheaper, more flexible, and easier to get β but requires you to leave every 180 days (or extend). The LTR targets wealthy retirees or highly paid professionals. The Elite Visa offers premium perks but costs 10β50x more. For most remote workers, the DTV wins.
The most common rejection cause is weak proof of remote work β unsigned contracts, vague freelancing platforms, or mismatched bank statements. Always provide signed contracts and clear income history. Use VisaCompass to see the full document checklist and current processing times for your country of application.
