Following the launch of the Entry/Exit System (EES), the European Union is rolling out ETIAS β the European Travel Information and Authorisation System. This pre-travel screening requirement will affect millions of visa-exempt travelers from over 60 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Brazil, and Japan.
ETIAS is an electronic travel authorization β similar to the US ESTA or Canada's eTA. It is not a visa. Instead, it's a pre-screening process that travelers must complete online before boarding a flight, ship, or bus to the Schengen Area.
The system cross-checks applicant information against EU security databases, Interpol records, and other systems to identify potential security, health, or migration risks before travelers arrive at the border.
ETIAS is required for citizens of countries that currently enjoy visa-free access to the Schengen Area. This includes nationals from:
If you currently need a Schengen visa, ETIAS does not apply to you β you'll continue using the standard visa process.
An approved ETIAS authorization is valid for three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. It allows multiple entries into the Schengen Area, each up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
Think of ETIAS as a lightweight security check β not a visa application.
If your ETIAS application is rejected, you have the right to appeal. The denial notice will explain the reason. You can reapply after addressing the issue. Without a valid ETIAS, airlines will not allow you to board.
