If you are a citizen of a visa-exempt country planning to fly to Canada, you will need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before boarding your flight. The Canadian eTA is a simple, affordable, and fast online process that links directly to your passport. Here is everything you need to know to apply successfully.
The eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) is a mandatory entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals traveling to Canada by air. It was introduced by the Canadian government in 2016. Citizens of countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia, France, Germany, Japan, Singapore, and dozens of others need an eTA before boarding a flight to Canada. Note that US citizens are exempt from the eTA requirement (they need a valid US passport or NEXUS card instead).
The eTA is not a visa β it is an electronically stored authorization linked to your passport. It allows stays of up to 6 months per visit and is valid for 5 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
Citizens of countries that require a full visitor visa for Canada β such as Brazil, India, or China β do not apply for an eTA. They must obtain a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) instead.
Always apply for your eTA before booking your flight, although most approvals happen instantly. If your eTA is denied, you will need to apply for a full visitor visa, which takes considerably longer. Carry the same passport linked to your eTA when you travel, as it is digitally connected β using a different passport will cause issues at the border.
Once in Canada, you can enter by land from the US as many times as you like without additional authorization (the eTA is only required for air travel). If you plan to work or study in Canada, you will need a separate work or study permit in addition to the eTA. The Canadian eTA system is efficient and traveler-friendly β apply early, travel easy.
